SUNDAY MORNING

"Everything you see has its
roots in the unseen world.
The forms may change,
yet the essence remains
the same. Every wonderful
sight will vanish; every
sweet word will fade, but
do not be disheartened.
The source they come
from is eternal, growing,
branching out, giving new
life and new joy. Why do
you weep? The source is
within you, and this whole
world is springing up from it."

WHY IS THIS MAN CRYING?

House Speaker John Boehner

The House of Representatives is on its' way to earning shit bird status since a force of Republicans have already made known they will vote against the job creating bill for roads and bridges.  Facing the November election may wipe out the dreams of Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who pledged to make Obama a one term President and make the Republicans the majority in the upcoming Senate.

According to Laura Clawson, "Boehner can't even get his own caucus together enough to vote for this far-right bill".  Since the bill would affect a wide range of unemployed construction workers, not to mention taxpayers driving on outdated bridges and roads, look for approval numbers to plummet before the summer recess and November elections.

IT'S CATURDAY!

Have yourself a very lazy weekend.

UPDATE: SOLDIER FACES DEATH PENALTY

PHOTO/story CNN

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales could be sentenced to death if convicted on any of the 17 counts of murder filed against him Friday for allegedly embarking on a bloody shooting rampage in Afghan villages, the U.S. military said.
In addition to the charges accusing him of murder "with premeditation," the 38-year-old faces six counts of assault and attempted murder.
Authorities say Bales left a remote outpost in Kandahar province's Panjwai district early March 11 and went house-to-house, gunning down villagers.

TGIF

Our TGIF model is really into exercise as you can see and what a great place to workout next to open water.  Well, you can get your exercise too, this weekend, by taking an hour to walk, swim or hit the links.  It's lovely Spring weather out there so don't miss getting that heart healthy exercise we all need.

Morning Slick !

A Southern stampede of work boots, blue-jeans, sweatshirts, and baseball caps promoting fertilizer to concrete to local high schools, for sausage and gravy biscuit breakfasts with coffee as I make my rounds between Mickey D’s and the big H each morning between 6:30 and 8:00.

While this group of typically male workers, file in and out, another group (also males) congregate in the back of each one of these establishments, also on their theoretical way to work, to share tales of what it was like to work for a variety of different employers for 30 to 40 years.  With their wrinkled friends they drink free coffee refills, passing along a better part of their mornings each day with nothing better to do.

The next onslaught (not so ferocious), are the working class females, prim and proper, ordering coffees and teas and an occasional frappe or two, along with their sausage biscuits and hash browns.  Those that aren’t working are next with their casual appearance attitudes wearing tennis shoes and nicely combed hair and always carrying folded newspapers, as if to say “this is my time today.”  Intermixed are the high school students, both males and females, white collar workers, and secretaries sent by their bosses to pick up orders for the “soon to be starting” meetings.

Good morning America, this is how we do it in the South; this is our ritual, a Southern tradition, a slow start to the day and a slow start for work to begin, but a gentle pace that all (even the carpetbaggers) can easily follow and have learned to follow quite well as they have infiltrated our neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses.

But, this is not about Northern migration to the South but about starting the morning.

How do you start your morning?

How do you begin the day?

Are you thankful for another day above ground, like you should be; or, do you take these days that you and the rest of us have been give for granted?  Perhaps, this is just the wisdom of age or a survivor of serious health concerns . . .  who knows?  But, each day should be a special day, a day where we must learn to give and not simply take or receive.

While we mourn the loss of our jobs and income and in some cases, the loss of our homes and self-esteem, we have brothers and sisters in other parts of the world who are much, much poorer than we are, who begin each day with the need to share what little they have with those who have even less than they do.

What illness posses them that would cause they to feel that way, I wonder?

And yes, even though we live in different countries, speak different languages, and have ideologies in which we believe and under which we live, we are all cut from the same cloth:  the human race.

In a way, I wish I could be like Forrest Gump and say, “and that is all I want to say about that!”  But, that is not my nature, as my wife will attest.  I want to go on and on and on about something in which I believe strongly, as is the case here.

Do we hate each other so much that we would want to kill ourselves off so that the only thing left to hate is life itself?

OR, is it just my imagination because I have not
had my second cup of coffee yet . . .  I wonder?

Let us know how you spend your mornings . . .

OF COURSE WE CAN'T SPEAK FOR EVERYONE BUT . . .

There was a time when the land was sacred,
and the ancient ones were as one with it,
A time when only the children of the
Great Sprit were here to light their fires
in the places with no boundaries . . .
In that time, when there were only simple ways,
I saw with my heart the conflicts to come,
and whether it was to be for good or bad,
what was certain was that there would be change.

2000 years ago, The Lakota (Sioux) Nation storytellers shared a story of a white buffalo and the white buffalo calf woman at council meetings and sacred ceremonies and while there were several variations of this story, the lesson was always the same:  “Have communication with the Creator through prayer with clear intent for Peace, Harmony and Balance for all life living in the Earth Mother.”

The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman tells how the People had lost the ability to communicate with the Creator. The Creator sent the sacred White Buffalo Woman to teach the People how to pray with the Pipe. With that Pipe, seven sacred ceremonies were given for the people to abide in order to ensure a future with harmony, peace, and balance.

The seven sacred ways to pray includes the following:
  1. Sweat Lodge for purification
  2. Naming Ceremony for child naming
  3. Healing Ceremony to restore health to the body, mind and spirit
  4. Adoption Ceremony for making of relatives
  5. Marriage Ceremony for uniting male and female
  6. Vision Quest for communing with the Creator for direction and answers to one's life
  7. Sundance Ceremony to pray for the well-being of all the People

Sacred Hoops, by Phil Jackson (former head coach of the Chicago Bulls) is a book about interwoven teachings of the Lakota Sioux with basketball in the sense of experiencing every moment with a clear mind and an open heart.  When you do that the game of basketball and life will take care of itself, Jackson says.

In the team room of the Chicago Bulls in the Sheri L. Berto Center, hangs a wooden arrow with a tobacco pouch tied to it, a Lakota Sioux symbol for prayer.  On another wall hangs a bear-claw necklace, conveying power and wisdom upon its wearer.  There is the middle feather of an Owl for balance and harmony and photos of white buffalo, the most sacred of symbols, for prosperity and good fortune.

Perhaps it is time for us to learn a lesson from our Native American brothers and sisters and find our own White Buffalos.

    BEST QUOTE THIS WEEK

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny came to Washington bearing a few special gifts for President Barack Obama.
Among them, an official certificate of Irish heritage. ?These are rare, as rare as the man himself,? Kenny said, presenting the document to Obama at a White House reception Tuesday.
The president, without missing a beat, thanked Kenny and drew guffaws from the crowd.
"This will have a special place of honor," he said, "alongside my birth certificate.

    A BILL COLLECTORS NEW WEAPON

    A Curse to Society
    By Victor M Adamus

I don’t even know if this is legal or not.  Reader be warned.  If you’re behind in your bills check and see if it’s legal in your state.

According to a cancer victim who is a year behind in her credit card bills, she’s now getting calls from neighbors and family asking why bill collectors are calling them, asking them to call her to ask her to call them.  How embarrassing, you may think.  Well it’s true.  Bonnie writes that when her Chemo treatments were no longer working, no other cure available, she faced her end of life scenario and figured to pay off her delinquent debts it was time to put the house on the market.  It was all she had left having gone through her savings, cashed out her retirement, sold one of her cars, and was down to advertising her china and what nots just to make money for utility bills.  She gave her dog of six years to a friend.

The credit card companies handed her delinquent bills off to a collection agency which roto-dialed her cell phone number daily and flooded her mailbox with threats of legal action.  In her condition she neither felt they had time to take her to court, nor could she afford an attorney.  She would appear before a judge and say she has no money and is dying of cancer and that would be a judgment that would one day go un-collectable.  Paid in full if her house sold.

The story would end here but for the fact that her bill collectors paid to access a legal database called LexisNexis.  This company holds and compiles information tracking people by their social security number and even cranks in a person’s address and collects phone numbers of neighbors who own property in the same block or street and provide the bill collectors with those names, numbers, as well as family names and phone numbers.  Since she had nothing to share with the bill collectors constantly calling, she ignored their calls.  Now they’re calling her family and neighbors.

As outrageous as this may appear, telling a bill collector you are jobless and dying of cancer means nothing.  Offering the house as collateral and providing them a legitimate MLS number so they can see she has her house on the market and priced right is meaningless.  They just don’t care.  But telling them she has little income doesn’t work either.  Dying of cancer, no job, still the calls keep coming in daily and now she’s hassled with answering the same questions to neighbors and family who know she’s been through Chemo hell.

No one, so far, knows if it’s legal or not here in Florida where I live.  I checked because I thought it was illegal but apparently even calling an employer is legal as long as they don’t reveal the amount the person is behind but OK to ask the employer to have the employee call them back.  But it still tips off the employer that the employee is not paying a bill.  Most employers don’t like bill collectors calling them and unfortunately for Bonnie she was forced to leave her job over a year ago because she ran out of vacation and sick time.  Currently she receives less than a thousand dollars a month on disability having left a job that previously paid her $65,000 a year.

LexisNexis is used by attorneys and news reporting agencies for the most part.  It’s a resource for anyone who wants personal information on someone in their database that is more than what a citizen can find in the local public records at the courthouse.  I see it as an invasion of privacy.  More than that  it’s a ridiculous waste of time.  If a person doesn’t have the ability to pay, how is a phone call going to change that?

I keep wondering why bill collectors even bother to call someone dying, no job, and not enough income stream to buy food for her dog.

    When Does Learning Take Place?

Or, more specifically, at what age does this “so called” learning take place?

Ubiquitous wisdom would have us believe that learning takes place during the typical time frame of K-12 grades and it is the teacher or the instructor who is responsible for this learning.

Once the child’s behavior has been modified to rely on the teacher for their reinforced learning skills, this conditioning continues to be exhibited in colleges and universities throughout the country.

And, we as thoughtful educators pat ourselves on the back and exclaim, “job well done.” If the job is not well done (as is often the case nowadays) we (the powers that be) have no choice but to blame the teacher or instructor or professor as the case may be.

The 2001 No Child Left Behind Act  that required schools to bring 100% of the students to math and English proficiency by the year 2014.  The Act was designed (by thoughtful law makers) to close the gap between low and middle income families.  Regardless of well-intentioned educators, 10 years later (2011) the data collected provided conclusive and persuasive proof that the NCLB Act was a total disaster and failure.

    WHY?

ArneDuncan, President Obama's Secretary of Education, has derided the bill as “utopian.”  Any critique of the NCLB Act, other than the Act aimed its sights too high, is irrelevant.  It is ludicrous to think that parents (regardless of their income levels) would not want their children to be proficient in both math and English or at the very least, a basic understand.

“Our understanding of child development is always evolving, and it is now clear that learning begins at birth or earlier.”

The NCLB Act does take into consideration that neither the instructor (skills, abilities, or characteristics) nor the instructor’s credentials have a direct link to learning and/or achievement, as we first thought.

“What we do know is that children gain major intellectual and development advantages from earlychildcare and that these advantages persist into adolescence.”

In 1998, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), conducted a study to assess early knowledge and behavior among young children, collected data on them from kindergarten through the 5th grade.   The study found that prior to entering school, "substantial minorities of children are already experiencing risks for developmental difficulties, with one in five being described as overly active, one in six having problems concentrating for sustained periods, and one in nine not articulating words clearly or fluently."

In other words, young children must learn rudimentary skills or building blocks to learning before they enter school.  Some of these children learned these building blocks from their parents while others did not and still others learned them at daycare, depending upon how “gifted” those daycare workers are being aware of their important role.

The bottom line here for the child and subsequent adult learner is that up until the age of 5 is when children acquire the skills that they will later use to become proficient in math and English.  In other words, it all starts at home first; and, if in the reading of this post, the message is still clear as mud then you need to re-read. Being parents is not just about fornication and buying toys; it is about teaching and nurturing so that they will be receptive to learning when it is time for them to attend school.

And, it is time to stop blaming the teacher who we have willingly given our responsibility to for educating our children because the data shows that it clearly must start at home first.

    Customer Service

I am more than confident that all of us have had both positive and negative experiences with customer service; in fact, would you believe that people are more likely to share negative customer experience stories than they are positive ones?

While most of us have heard that being proactive is better than being negative, we still like to share our negative experiences with family, friends, and co-workers, making it very difficult to maintain at positive attitude either at home or at work.

Some of us who work in the customer service industry understand all too well what it is like to feel poor customer service while keeping our eyes closed when we have to give good customer service – I guess Americans just do better at receiving than giving.

And, of course, we all know about customer loyalty that is, treating our customers as if they are going to be our customers for a lifetime.

Typically, when we think of customer service, we immediately think of someone talking on a telephone, when in reality those type of customer service are low on our list.

We have servers in restaurants, doctors and nurses, teachers, law enforcement, firemen, our military, retail sales people, religious employees, IT technicians, athletes, musicians, clerks and secretaries, real estate brokers, car dealers, tourism industry workers, etc., and the list goes on and on and on.

20 ways to kill customer loyalty
    Uncertainty
    Complacency
    Apathy about your job
    Lack of confidence
    Bad customer service
    A bad attitude
    An aggressive attitude
    Indifference towards a customer
    Lack of enthusiasm
    A communications breakdown
    Inconsistency
    A weak relationship
    A long waiting time
    A slow returned phone call/email
    Arguing with a customer
Making a customer feel that they are wrong
    Making a customer feel ignorant
    Being impatient with a customer
    Using unfamiliar jargon
    A failed promise

Do any of these 20 items remind you of you?

WELL . . . THIS IS NOT GOOD NEWS

KID SHOT DEAD BY WATCH DOG GOON

    A Civic Duty You Say?

    By Victor M Adamus

    TRAYVON MARTIN
Here’s a headline and story of a senseless shooting of teen and High School football star Trayvon Martin who left a basketball half time show to go to a 7-11 nearby to buy a candy bar for his younger brother.  Upon his return to a gated community just north of Orlando, the neighborhood Watch Captain, self appointed, George Zimmerman, called 911 like he has 41 other times, demanding police arrest this intruder he spoted, taking a short cut through the trees to his father’s house.  This time Zimmerman couldn’t wait on the police to show up.  He pulled out a 9mm gun and shot the supposed intruder in the chest.  Martin died on the spot.

Florida has been known as the gun capitol of the world since the legislature passed a law last year that people can shoot in self defense anyone who comes onto their property they don’t recognize.  We’re a gun happy culture down here.  That’s exactly what Zimmerman pleaded, “self defense”.  He so far has not been charged with anything including obstruction of justice because the 911 operator told him to stay in his car until police arrived.  Zimmerman’s answer was “they always let these assholes get away”.  So he took the law into his own hands and shot a black student who had every right to be in the community visiting his father who lived there.

The area of Orlando and, in fact, the state population has responded with shock as the story is reported from all news outlets ‘round the clock, statewide.  Last night the story made headlines on ABC News.  Now everyone in the U.S. knows about the shooting; the gated community; the hundred some questions as to why Zimmerman, a college student himself, 26, didn’t stay in his car; his self-appointed Watch Captain position which few members of the community even knew about; and the 41 calls to 911 reporting intruders that the police did respond to but found to be friends or hired workers of people who lived in the community.

It’s scary.  An obvious nut case who went off with no verifiable evidence that the so called intruder was not, in fact, supposed to be there.  He just up and shot Martin dead while Martin was yelling "Help!".

It also doesn’t bode well for Real Estate agents selling the concept of living in a gated community or does it?  Perhaps it does, if you know there is some nut case running loose with a 9mm gun.  I doubt gated communities have that right to appoint someone as Watch Captain who is armed.  But that’s another story.

The point is Zimmerman should have been held or charged with some offense.  Instead he loaded up a U-haul and went off to the unknown, hiding out while the story dies out.  I doubt it will.  Not before Zimmerman is behind bars.  The communities are demanding justice.

Read the story.  It’s as crazy as it gets here in the sunshine state.
