Mirror, mirror on the wall

By the age of 13, 50% of girls are dissatisfied with their appearance. By the age of 18 and older, 80% of American females (10 million) are dissatisfied with their appearance.  In fact, this issue is not just with females, in 2010 the NY Times reported that nearly 46% of all males were also dissatisfied with their appearance.

In 2005, NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) reported that 25 million Americans had an eating disorder.  In 2010, CBS News reported that 2/3 of Americans were battling obesity.  The CDC has recently reported that US marriage rate is 8.8/1000 while US divorce rate is 3.4/1000 or 50%.

Besides obesity, here is what Americans want to change about their looks:
  • Color of eyes
  • Color of hair,
  • Freckles both with and without
  • Height
  • Ear size
  • Permanent eye liner, shadow
  • Varicose veins
  • Cellulite
  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of hair
  • Crooked teeth
  • Hair on body
  • Breast size
  • Eye lashes
  • Size of lips
Can one imagine the amount of money that both males and females are spending, instead of saving for their future, because they dislike how they look?

Can you imagine the impact on children when their parent’s divorce?

Can you image the cost to society because of this obsession?

Who is responsible for turning this great nation into a group of insecure people who are so dissatisfied with their appearances that they will spend billions of dollars each year on ways to change?

Since our Occupy Wall Street protesters have moved beyond 30 days now and appear to have serious concerns for this country,  I would suggest that they spend some time grappling with this issue of greed which is clearly and obviously on both sides of the fence.
