NEWSWEEK COVER OFFENDS SOME

It Doesn't Say What it Means
By Victor M Adamus

I look at this cover of Newsweek and the first thoughts that come to mind is fire the headline writer, Sullivan, a gay activist himself, as the words indicate the President is “gay” not that he endorsed same sex marriage.  Many people may be offended by this poor choice of words because Obama is a family man and certain respect should be given by those who are gay to those who are heterosexual.  The Newsweek Cover sucks.  And what's with the halo?

We are now learning, daily, of polls showing Romney taking the lead because people have decided that same sex marriage should not be legalized, certainly not at the federal level, become the law of the land.  The controversy will continue through the November elections as it should.  Romney made it clear at Liberty University this past weekend that marriage is between “one man and one woman”.  It will be the Independents in the middle who end up deciding who is right, either we progress to provide equality to all as a civil right, or we ban same sex marriage in order to reinforce tradition in our culture.

The religious right is all over the map on this one.  Take for example Solomon who had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines [1 Kings 11:2.3].  Certainly his thirst for lust and love was not devoted to just one woman.  Abijah married fourteen wives [2 Chronicles 13:21] another happy camper.  The Bible is steeped in controversy itself even holding references to equal loves without defining the gender.  But it’s a hot issue in this political year and it’s likely going to surface many times between the candidates as a distraction to jobs and the economy, key issues that most Americans see more important than who marries whom.

Controversy in the House

Already the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has tried to steer clear of the controversy.  Despite his efforts House Republicans want to ban the use of military chapels for same sex marriages.  The Bill that the mostly tea party faction want to amend is a standard bi-partisan Bill to pay for the troops and endorse Department of Defense Policy.  It usually flies through the House and Senate but this time will be debated on the floor with the amendment opening a debate on same sex marriage, something Boehner wanted to avoid.  The debate could stall a vote on the Bill which was expected this week.

Obama’s declaration in favor of same sex marriage could become a game changer.  It’s definitely a milestone in American politics and our culture.  But six months from now will it be credited with keeping his job as President for four more years?  That’s the question a lot of people are wondering.
