A Presidential Endorsement
By Victor M Adamus
I don’t think it was a political move, more a personal
decision, for President Barack Obama to come out in favor of same sex marriage
last week. Polls show it splits among
party lines which means he gains as much as he loses. He did make the history books as the first
President to support this civil rights action.
It is, in fact, the civil rights movement of today. The traditional man and woman bond based
almost entirely on being able to reproduce an offspring and its biblical
message has long standing in our American culture. So much so, that this meaningful statement of
love between a man and a woman is celebrated at the altar of God regardless of
faith.
No, I think the President did “evolve” over time in his
Presidency to realize equality for everyone was the more important choice. He had said when campaigning in 2008 that he
believed marriage should be held in a special place reserved for those that can
pro-create. Now he agrees that gays can
adopt children and raise them as their own.
I remember George W Bush making a speech about family and
was adamantly opposed to same sex marriage.
This set back the civil rights movement for gays by 8 if not more years
with Obama closing the door on “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” for military
personnel. That in itself was a huge
jump.
His opponent, Mitt Romney, a Bishop in the Mormon Church,
stands by his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman and refuses to
consider gay marriage on a federal level.
At present 32 states have amended their Constitutions to ban gay
marriage. Those laws, voted by the
people in those respective states, could still outweigh any legislation in Obama’s
second term. It would be a test to take
it to the Supreme Court.
So people have now picked sides. And on Mother’s Day most of the clergy in
churches where the pastor is against same sex marriage, the biblical persuasion
was recorded by media in different faiths across the nation. But what’s done is done. The President is for gay marriage and the
controversy will likely extend to a campaign issue over the summer. It may even find its’ way into the Democratic
planks in September.
This is our theme for this week. Investigate the ups and downs of same sex
marriage. We will also provide a history
of biblical thoughts and why this has become as important to gays as the civil
rights movement was to blacks. Stay
tuned.
