JOBS… Jobs… Jobs…
SOOOOOoooooooooo, why were there 3 million unfilled jobs a year ago?
“There’s a tremendous mismatch in the jobs market right now,” states James Manyika, one of the authors of a new McKinsey study An Economy That Works: Job Creation and America’s Future. “It runs across skill set, gender, class and geography.”
Why is this?
· People do not want to relocate
· Applicants cannot pass drug testing
· Applicants lack interpersonal skills
· Families need both income streams
· There is a skills gap of:
o Human resources
o Accounting
o Engineering
o Math Science
o Computer
o Information Technology
In October 2012, G. I. Jobs reported, as many as 600,000 high-tech manufacturing jobs remain unfilled in the U.S., in part because manufacturers cannot find skilled workers to fill production jobs.
It is also obvious that many of our unemployed Americans, simply will not accept work opportunities if they perceive them to be “below one’s dignity,” such as:
· Crop Picker,
· Janitor or Maid,
· Garbage Collector,
· Car Washer,
· Laborer,
· Truck Driver,
· Prison Guard, and
· Customer Service, just to name a few.
On a side note: there was a period in my life where, during a 10 year period of time, I was unemployed more than I was employed,; so, I raked leaves, answered telephones, sold female clothes over the phone, and performed work of a day laborer, all at $8/hour, even though I had an MBA, just so I could pay my bills… and yes, it was humiliating but it had to be done. I was just lucky that I lived in a State that was about 15-21% cheaper to live, on average, than anywhere else in the country.
According to XPAT Jobs, there are numerous jobs in China from administration and aerospace to healthcare and hotel catering to management and marketing to telecommunications to tourism that Americans could fill. There are jobs in other countries as well, such as:
- Australia
- Bolivia
- Brazil
- Canada
- Caribbean
- Korea
- Israel
- Greece
- Portugal
- and on and on and on…
Yes, you would have to relocate, but you would be working and we are moving into a Global Economy. Just as foreigners move into the US to work, so too should Americans move into foreign countries to work and all that is required of the unemployed is developing a new “mindset.”
In order for me to live as “well off” as my parents lived (Mom did not ever work) both my wife and I had to work full time plus overtime. With the levels of unemployment, and the rest of the world coming to take America’s lifestyle away from her residents, Americans will need to develop more progressive thinking that could entail:
2. No longer working 40 hours/week to reduce cost of employee benefits
3. Having to work for less wages and benefits
4. Not being allowed to live off of credit
5. Sharing dwellings with relatives or friends
6. Only having one car per family
7. Relying on public transportation
We live in a global economy where many jobs can be accomplished at home via the internet, allowing employers to hire from all over the world.
We live in a world that requires skills in the areas of: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math which will provide the higher paying jobs if you are willing to relocate.
We live in a climate of cultural diversity where competition for employment is keen and “birth status” is no longer taken for granted.
We live in an environment where people are just as competitive towards each other as Apple and Samsung are competing for marketshare.
