Presidential Politics 2012

Wednesday’s Debate

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Economists think Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would be better for the economy than President Obama. But they're not very enthusiastic about either of them.

Nine of 17 top economists surveyed by CNNMoney picked Romney when asked whose election would help the economy grow more. Only three picked Obama.

But the remaining five made no pick, with several suggesting neither would provide much of a lift to the sagging economy.

"Obama doesn't really understand business and Romney doesn't really understand how to govern. So pick your poison," said Gary Rosenberger of EconoPlay, one of those surveyed who refused to give a pick.

LUCKY US! ! !

WASHINGTON, October 1, 2012 — Whatever former Governor Mitt Romney does during the debates, he must not seem desperate, although the recent polls probably give him a sinking feeling. He has to act like a winner if he is to win the debate. Now there is no doubt that the Republican nominee for president is going to be on edge, wanting to drive his points home. There should be little worry that he will just mail them in. There’s  too much is at stake

What to expect:

Obama will be laying out a coherent direction with serious outcomes that impact not just the middle class but all income levels while taking no risks since he is ahead in the polls.

Romney is behind all the polls but especially in the swing States, so he must be the instigator which is a role that he is not comfortable in and did not succeed in that role when he tried to exercise it before.

The odds are that there will be no clear cut victor or loser in these debates even though points will be scored successfully on both sides, I believe.  So, the election is going to rest with the voters and the party who does the best job at getting the base out to vote.  As far as those still straddling the fence, the debate will not help them either and they will just have to decide who they think will be the best for the country.

Should there be a large government that takes care of the people and that regulates business and commerce so that the greedy do not become excessively so or should there be a small government that favors business (both large and small) where individuals have the opportunity to become whoever and whatever they want.

Unfortunately, no one will ever know for sure if their decision was correct until they look back 8-10 years from now and realize the unintended consequences of our actions.

And, YES, it takes that long!
