In the wake of hurricane Sandy’s devastation, we have ALL taken time to pause for prayers, reflections, and the give thanks for those who have survived. From a spiritual/religious standpoint, we ALL know that those who did not survive are in a better place today. From a futuristic standpoint, we ALL know that we must move forward, rebuild, and continue to pursue our dreams. But, from a here and now perspective, we ALL are simply stunned just as we were in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Just a few days ago, on CNN and CBS, I heard that the NYC Marathon was on despite the devastation; but, this morning, I heard on CNN and CBS that it had been cancelled due to “push back” from the survivors of Sandy. I also heard that NYC would have generated $300 million in tourist revenues from the race which have now been lost as well. I also heard that many of those athletes who travelled from countries all over the world have “wasted” (for lack of a better word) their money which could have averaged about $12-15,000 per person.
Will these athlete travelers return next year?
Of course, that is not to say, that money is more valuable than human life!
But, what is just as valuable (at least in my opinion) is the HUMAN SPIRIT. The HUMAN SPIRIT that has the will and the desire to survive and carry on while sending a message to the rest of the world that NOTHING can dampen our American Spirit.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Sandy passed through the Caribbean as well and no mention was made of postponing or stopping the NYC Marathon. Malala, who is a victim of terrorism, hatred, and ignorant violence, did not stop the NYC Marathon. Starving children in Africa is not on anyone’s mind in America really, and certainly gave no input to stopping the NYC Marathon.
I believe the NYC Marathon should have taken place as scheduled in honor of ALL the victims of hurricane Sandy.
Am I too naïve here?
Do we not honor our dead by acts of courage in the present?
What are your thoughts?
