SPECULATIONS

Democratic Party words...
  • Republicans (conservative) favor a lean government
  • Republicans (conservative) favor businesses, big businesses and the wealthy
  • Republican (conservative) favor a strong military
  • Republicans (conservative) favor a reduction in entitlements

Republican Party words...

  • Democrats (liberal) favor a large government
  • Democrats (liberal) favor small businesses, the middle class and poor
  • Democrats (liberal) favor a prepared military
  • Democrats (liberal) favor increasing entitlements

And, while these four points are intentionally broad they capture the flavor of the political party and the median belief of their constituents; even though there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats.
But there is a nagging issue that still perplexes me and that is how much control and/or influence the President, Congress, and Senate has over the creation of new jobs or in the filling of existing jobs?
For example, there are laws that favor business and laws that do not favor business and business has continued to operate in both situations and not only maintained but have grown in size and in revenues and not just because of inflation.

Jobs are being shipped overseas not just because of these governmental laws and regulations but because American labor costs too much.  In Knoxville, TN, Sea Ray, a boat builder, is closing down a plant and laying off 225 workers because of a decrease in sales; and yet, they are relocating the TN plant to Brazil, citing they will save $7 to $12 million in labor costs.

The South has traditionally been a low wage jurisdiction attracting many businesses to escape the higher wages of the north which were typically brought about by labor unions, which by the way, typically support the Democrats.  Additionally, most Southern States are also “employee at will” states which means anyone can be terminated without giving a reason which by the way, typically favors the Republicans.

So, again, what can any elected official do about this that has not already been done or attempted to be done?

NOTHING.

And yet, both parties are using it as a political weapon of sorts.

What can elected officials do about the lacking skill of workers and students if workers and students do not want to acquire those skills?

And, if they do something like force acquiring these skills, would that be ethical?

Would it violate our rights and freedoms?

Students do not want to acquire, science, math, technology, or engineering skills and yet this is precisely the areas in which these new jobs are being created.

In comparison, the rest of the world basically wants to acquire these skills, whether they like it or not because they want to work.

What can elected officials do about this?

NOTHING.

Americans in general do not want to pick crops whether they be fruits, vegetables,  both, or other.

Americans in general to not want to clean bathrooms, change linens in rooms or any other menial job that might be available in the hospitality industry.

Americans do not want to join the military, nor do they want to become a policeman or a fireman or a taxicab driver in a large metropolitan area.

Americans do not want to repair railroads, automobiles, trucks or anything else that gets them dirty, especially if they have to use public transportation.

Only a few can be spies or musical rock stars, actors, or play professional sports.

So, what can our elected officials do to change America’s “Mind Set?”
