The Saturday Night Republican Debates

That’s what it reminded me of, children’s rhymes.  Either that or the debaters did all they could to kiss Wall Street’s ass.  Not a new question was asked by moderators Diane Sawyers and George Stephanopoulos.  Yet it moved back and forth between slamming Obama care and personal lives of mostly those on stage born with a silver spoon.  If you were looking for a dominant force, it was not Newt Gingrich and Romney paled compared to Newt’s “fire from the hip” snaps.  Mostly it was boring with one exception: Dr Ron Paul spoke about grid lock in the current Congress urging his colleagues to do what their Constitutional Oath called for which is what Americans have long expected, politicians working together for the common good.

Of course we all know better.  Congress is controlled by another oath which never surfaced in the debates.  That of Grover Norquist having all Republicans, including House Speaker, John Bonehead, signing on to an oath that overrides the loyalty oath to all Americans, one that says they will never raise taxes, a job entrusted to them by the American electorate.  Norquist is like Russia's Putin and he runs his Politburo side of Congress with an iron fist.  The other issue that stood out for a brief moment was the loyalties the candidates have to the K Street Lobbyist who control Congress by doing Wall Street’s bidding.  They simply do as their told because if not, there goes their campaign funding.

The Occupy Wall Street movement never came up.  The rehash of Obama care bashing was them talking to their illiterate base.  Immigration reform removed shoring up the borders but focused on what would they do as President to deal with the illegals who have been here 25 years and have two generations of family working in the American economy.  With no solution offered from either candidate the questions moved on to their personal lives, marriage, business and really tough questions like religion, hoping the Mormon on stage would melt away.  It didn’t happen.

 So another ho hum was the spectacle of a promising night of infighting between the two front runners Romney and Gingrich.  For what it’s worth the only adult on the stage was Dr Ron Paul.  But he too brings a lot of baggage to the sand box.  His isolationists policies to pay down the national debt seem surprising with all that’s going on in the world.  I anticipate a U.S. with no Department of Defense and only our military shoring up the borders and handing over to folks who bear arms the right to defend themselves and their neighbors.  But Paul didn’t go that far.  It’s only that one hand covers the other.  If there is no military but the one to fight when and if we are attacked on our own soil then a Defense Department is meaningless.  That would cut a big chunk off the nation’s debt.

The winner was President Obama.  If there is no different solution to the economic crisis caused by the Republicans and their great wars, then what’s the point in changing hats in mid-stream?  Surely they know that.  What’s the point?  How many people really care about taking Janitorial jobs away from illegals only to teach our children how to clean their own schools?  Rather sophomoric I would say.  But that was as good as it got Saturday night.  This debate had failure written all over it because the candidates themselves were playing Pat-a-Cake.
