Think My Hair Makes My Ears Look Big?

It’s Not Over
By Alex Hutchins

While the title of this piece may seem to have little or nothing to do with the subtitle, it is still a question that we seldom think to ask . . . so, I am asking it.  Throughout 2011, we have been inundated with less than positive news as all forms of media have taken it upon themselves to report about human tragedy, natural disasters, unemployment, greedy business people, scandals (political and otherwise), man’s inhumanity to man, our falling real estate market, bankruptcies, “dirty” and uncompromising politicians, relentless wars waged upon ideologies, and the slow and methodical decline of our middle class.

It also appears to this writer, whether right or wrong, that the general public is not so much against money and greed but against those who have gotten so much of it . . . it, being money; and, since they have so much of “it,” the majority of average to poor, want it to be shared; although, I am not totally convinced that this sharing will be equitable; nonetheless, the collective conscious seems to want it this way.

So, again the question:  Do you think my hair makes my ears look big?  This question is just as absurd as our failure to see the “goodness of life,” because those of us who are alive are not looking at either the hair or the ears but the body of mankind.  If we are very, very lucky the media will use the last 90 seconds of their broadcasts to report something “light” and “fluffy” and positive like the baseball team of amputee veterans or the “love” that is expressed when the community covers the less fortunate with their cloak of kindness.

As a surviving cancer and heart attack (heart disease) patient, I will spend the rest of my life (which is a blessing however long) wondering if my cancer has returned or has metastasized to a different organ (putting me in a terminal situation) or if one of my stinted heart arteries failed to do the job, and knowing both of these conditions upon which my life is now based, must find a way to keep my stress levels down. But no, I do not think my hair makes my ears look big anymore.

What I think is that it is not over . . .

As 2011 comes to a close and we open the door to the anticipation of 2012, we as a society and the role model for the rest of the world, need to demonstrate a positive attitude and encourage the 99% to have a positive attitude as well.  It makes no difference at all if our hair makes our ears look big because we are alive and living life in all its fullness which has little to do with money, and never will.  We can complain or we can be positive – which one makes you feel better?
