Barista Scott Callaghan |
by Alex Hutchins
According to Wikipedia (sometimes inaccurate) there are 64 different styles of coffees that can be ordered by customers. Barista is Italian for bartender and typically refers to the preparation and serving of expresso based drinks that includes preparing and pulling the shot using an automated or manual machine. The manual process is highly skilled since it involves grinding, dosing, tamping, and leveling with the goal of obtaining the desired extraction. Too much or too little grinded beans, to heavy or too light in the tamping can cause a bitter or weak extraction. However, quality extraction is also related to: extraction time, water quality, water temperature, frothing milk and pouring the frothed milk in a design. We also should not forget the importance of the coffee bean in this process as well.
And, we just thought a cup of coffee was a cup of coffee or a simple cappuccino when ordering at our local coffee shop.
