Good for the Heart |
I noticed this label on a banana that I purchase at a Walmart in East Tennessee this week as I began to peel off the outer cover and my first thought was I wonder how many people actually understand what this phrase means. I wonder if people realized that if it were not for the Mexican worker, harvesting our produce, much of what we take for granted would simply not be there, available for us to purchase and consume.
I remember the banana pudding that my Mother made using Jell-O pudding and Vanilla Wafers and how my wife changed the recipe on me, using lite pudding and reduced fat wafers and somehow it just was not the same; but, in both cases the banana was always the heart healthy kind.
I love eating bananas so much that I have often wondered that if I planted a banana would it grow a tree; well, believe it or not, that might work if it were a wild banana that has seeds, but typically bananas are propagated asexually from offshoots of the plant. Growing bananas need lots of light and warmth (now lower than 67 degrees F at night) and humidity (50+).
As a person with heart disease, raw bananas without any topping (or dunking) along with my morning heart healthy oatmeal is my daily routine. I often eat two at a time, like biscuits which I am not supposed to eat anymore either; but, 2 bananas with coffee make for a satisfying afternoon snack and I suppose that I will continue to follow this routine until I can find out where my wife hid the nillas.
