Two Movie Reviews
by Alex Hutchins
Instead of going to Grandmother’s house this year, since she was in New York, my wife and I decided to spend the day at the Cinema. We were looking at several movies and finally decided on two that we both wanted to see. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starring Daniel Craig (of James Bond fame) and Rooney Mara (of Social Network) and War Horse, a Steven Spielberg directed film. The actors in War Horse were totally unknown to us which sometimes can influence whether or not we enjoyed the film.
The first movie that we saw was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and in the lobby opted to see this movie without a drink or popcorn, something we usually treat ourselves to when we go to the movies. Without giving away the plot of the story, let me say that both my wife and I enjoyed the movie but it was filled with disgusting sexual scenes that made us hate the perpetrators that is very unusual to pull out an emotion like that in both of us. The movie started off slow but as it gradually set the stage, it moved very quickly from one scene to another, keeping everyone in the theater on the edge of their seats. No one was eating popcorn or anything else because there was complete silence. The love story ending was not really expected and could have been left out.
The second movie we saw was War Horse and since it was a movie that both of us really wanted to see, we decided to treat ourselves to a soft drink and popcorn (not buttered). This movie as well started out a little slow and this viewer was not really sure what was developing. However, with that said, the cinematography was simply outstanding and spectacular. While the movie critics did not give favorable reviews, my wife and I thought the storyline kept us totally involved as the movie progressed. While not being a military historian, it appeared to offer a realistic flavor of the vitality and brutality of war. The ending was expected but did not seem believable to me; however, my wife thought it was wonderful although, throughout the entire movie she was amazed at how badly the animals were treated.
Both these movies are entertaining and worth seeing and it was something new to do on Christmas Day.

I HAD LEFT TWO COMMENTS HERE, AND NEITHER POSTED.
WHAT IS GOING ON?
BOTH WERE LENGTHY. I CANNOT DUPLICATE.
The equine heroes of Spielberg's latest epic were not harmed in any way making the movie. Extra care was taken in a climactic sequence in which a horse is caught up in barbed wire in No Man's Land. "It took much longer to shoot that scene because we had to make sure every single shot was safe for the horse." The barbed wire was actually "Styrofoam rubber painted silver."
I will summarize my other comment that is lost in cyber never land:
I read all of Larsson's trilogy. So you must read the next two books to follow up on this story.
The US version of this film was not as graphic as the European. They intenionally scaled back on the violence.
Wish I could recover the rest of what I said........
