A Civic Duty You Say?

TRAYVON MARTIN |
Here’s a headline and story of a senseless shooting of teen and High School football star Trayvon Martin who left a basketball half time show to go to a 7-11 nearby to buy a candy bar for his younger brother. Upon his return to a gated community just north of Orlando, the neighborhood Watch Captain, self appointed, George Zimmerman, called 911 like he has 41 other times, demanding police arrest this intruder he spoted, taking a short cut through the trees to his father’s house. This time Zimmerman couldn’t wait on the police to show up. He pulled out a 9mm gun and shot the supposed intruder in the chest. Martin died on the spot.
Florida has been known as the gun capitol of the world since the legislature passed a law last year that people can shoot in self defense anyone who comes onto their property they don’t recognize. We’re a gun happy culture down here. That’s exactly what Zimmerman pleaded, “self defense”. He so far has not been charged with anything including obstruction of justice because the 911 operator told him to stay in his car until police arrived. Zimmerman’s answer was “they always let these assholes get away”. So he took the law into his own hands and shot a black student who had every right to be in the community visiting his father who lived there.
The area of Orlando and, in fact, the state population has responded with shock as the story is reported from all news outlets ‘round the clock, statewide. Last night the story made headlines on ABC News. Now everyone in the U.S. knows about the shooting; the gated community; the hundred some questions as to why Zimmerman, a college student himself, 26, didn’t stay in his car; his self-appointed Watch Captain position which few members of the community even knew about; and the 41 calls to 911 reporting intruders that the police did respond to but found to be friends or hired workers of people who lived in the community.
It’s scary. An obvious nut case who went off with no verifiable evidence that the so called intruder was not, in fact, supposed to be there. He just up and shot Martin dead while Martin was yelling "Help!".
It also doesn’t bode well for Real Estate agents selling the concept of living in a gated community or does it? Perhaps it does, if you know there is some nut case running loose with a 9mm gun. I doubt gated communities have that right to appoint someone as Watch Captain who is armed. But that’s another story.
The point is Zimmerman should have been held or charged with some offense. Instead he loaded up a U-haul and went off to the unknown, hiding out while the story dies out. I doubt it will. Not before Zimmerman is behind bars. The communities are demanding justice.
Read the story. It’s as crazy as it gets here in the sunshine state.

Yes, this one is crazy but Florida's laws open the door for nuts like this to walk around with guns and shoot if threatened.
But, the sad part here, the hard part to swallow is the fact that the 911 operator told him not to follow.
Certainly, there is no psych test to buy a home in a gated community.
